A Japan representative and documents show that Japan has called on India to be exempted from any temporary tariff aimed at suppressing steel imports, claiming that this would affect the supply of high-end special alloys needed by India. As the world's second-largest crude steel producer, India launched an investigation in December last year to consider whether to impose temporary tariffs (locally called safeguard duties) to restrict steel imports. The Indian Steel Minister confirmed last month that the investigation is ongoing. 'Japanese steel exports are to meet India's demand for high-performance steel,' a Japanese delegation said in the report.
