Ethereum developers failed to launch new testnet Holesky. Planned as an anniversary celebration of the Merge upgrade that took place around this time last year, the network fell through.
Although some validators were able to manually initialize the network, Ethereum core developers said a misconfiguration was found in one of the network's genesis files.
The developers decided to postpone the launch by two weeks.
This type of failure is rare for Ethereum, which has been rolling out major upgrades like Merge and Shapella without any problems over the past year.
Ethereum, the second largest blockchain after Bitcoin, is the largest of the networks that performs many computer-like functions and can support smart contracts.
Developers can continue to use Goeli
Testnets are clones of networks used to simulate transactions and test applications before integrating them into the main blockchain. Ethereum developers created Holesky to replace Goerli, one of the blockchain's existing testnets.
The Goerli testnet remains live so that developers can continue their testing on the network. Goerli is scheduled to be discontinued at the beginning of 2024.
Holesky, which will allow twice as many validators to join the network compared to Mainnet, is expected to alleviate scaling issues in Ethereum.
“It is possible to revitalize the network with a fix, but we think a fresh start that will provide continuity for years will yield cleaner results,” said Ethereum Foundation engineer Parithosh Jayanthi.
Holesky is also critical to Dencun, the next hard fork in Ethereum. The proto-danksharding feature is expected to be added, aiming to scale the blockchain on the network. According to Jayanthi, the stumble in Holesky's launch is unlikely to affect Dencun's timing.
