You can't be too nice to people with low cognition. Why is that? It means you have to speak to people in their own language, and to ghosts in theirs; it's a normal way to handle things. Otherwise, you'll just end up suffering yourself. Because some people have this characteristic, called small-minded people who fear power but lack virtue. Some people, like in the animal kingdom, only fear those who are stronger than them and bully those who are weaker. They cannot fairly perceive whether you are good or bad to them, and thus they lack gratitude. There are many such people, and if you treat this group with high cognition—using concepts like respect, friendship, reciprocity, and thinking of their welfare—then their understanding would be that you are weak and easy to bully. In the food chain, you are in a lower position, not in a higher one. If you are in a lower position, when it comes to eating, I should eat first; when it comes to distribution, I should get my share first and only give you what’s left. I need to oppress you from time to time, using power to bully you, to keep you feeling good in that lower position. This is how they think.
