Netflix uses AI to create effects for movies, causing controversy in the film industry.
Netflix has just revealed that it used generative AI ( to handle visual effects ) in a scene from the series The Eternaut – an Argentine television work set in a post-apocalyptic world after a deadly snowstorm that killed millions.
According to co-CEO Ted Sarandos, this AI technology helps them "achieve impressive results at an incredible speed" – the scene of a building collapsing in Buenos Aires was completed ten times faster than traditional VFX methods. Sarandos calls this an "incredible opportunity to make better films, not just cheaper."
Nevertheless, many people in the film industry are concerned that AI will pose a serious threat to jobs, especially when a report from CVL Economics warns that AI could disrupt up to 204,000 jobs in the film and television industry by 2027, primarily affecting lower-level positions.
Netflix is also experimenting with AI in content recommendation, with a tool that allows users to find movies by voice, such as: "I want to watch a suspenseful psychological movie from the 80s."
