U.S. President Donald Trump has abandoned plans to fire Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. Trump called Powell "doing a terrible job," implying that eight months after her term ends, "We will change then." According to US media, Trump recently asked Republicans in a closed-door meeting whether they should consider firing Powell. Some in the room thought Trump was serious about the issue and would likely act. However, under constitutional authority, the president does not have the authority to directly fire the Fed Chairman. Trump continued to harshly criticize Powell. "She's always too late, which is why I nicknamed her 'Too Late,'" Trump said, accusing Powell of making the decision to cut interest rates to benefit the Democrats politically. It is noted that Powell was first appointed to the position by Trump in 2017, and Trump expressed surprise by saying, "I'm surprised she was appointed." However, Trump directed his criticism mainly at President Joe Biden, arguing that Powell should not be reappointed for a second term.
