According to Decrypt, an investigation conducted by Reuters in partnership with blockchain analytics companies Global Ledger and Recoveris revealed that Russian intelligence has been using Bitcoin to pay untrained teenage spies. A Reuters report details the recent case of Laken Pavan, a Canadian citizen who was sentenced to 20 months in prison last December after pleading guilty to assisting Russian intelligence in Poland. Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and military intelligence agencies (GRU) have repeatedly used cryptocurrencies to fund young people in Poland for surveillance, propaganda labelling and arson, and some of the funds have been used to hire mercenaries in the Donbas region and bribe European politicians, Recoveris said.
