Scroll zkEVM Getting Started Guide

This article provides beginners with the basics of interacting with L2 Dapps. We will use Scroll zkEVM as an example to explore how to get started with the Ethereum L2 network and interact with applications on it. The skills learned here can, in principle, be applied to other layer two networks. For demonstration, we will use an on-chain tic-tac-toe game running on the Scroll L2 network.

Preparation: Install a Crypto Wallet

If you have already installed a crypto wallet, you can skip this step. Otherwise, please install a crypto wallet that is suitable for your browser or mobile device.

Step 1: Configure Scroll L2 Testnet and Goerli Testnet

Scroll zkEVM has currently launched its alpha testnet, which is a Layer 2 network compatible with the EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine). This means that smart contracts written for the Ethereum network can be directly deployed on Scroll zkEVM. The Scroll L2 alpha testnet is currently connected to the Goerli test network on Ethereum L1, ensuring finality by batching transactions sent to the Goerli L1 network.

To set up the Scroll L2 network, please visit the official website and follow the instructions to add the network to your cryptocurrency wallet. At the same time, if you have not added it yet, please also add the Goerli network to your wallet.

Step 2: Obtain Goerli Test ETH

After configuring the network in your wallet, you need to obtain some Goerli ETH from a faucet. There are multiple faucets to choose from, each with its own features and limitations. You can choose one or more faucets to acquire enough test ETH.

Step 3: Bridge ETH from Goerli to Scroll L2

After obtaining enough Goerli ETH, the next step is to bridge some ETH to the Scroll L2 testnet. Visit the official bridging interface and follow the instructions on the page to transfer ETH to your address on the Scroll L2 testnet. Please note that this process may take some time to complete.

Step 4: Experience the On-Chain Tic-Tac-Toe Game

Once ETH is successfully transferred to Scroll L2, you can start experiencing the on-chain tic-tac-toe game. Visit the game webpage, connect your wallet, and create a new game. This is a multiplayer game where you need to add your friends' addresses or use a second wallet as your opponent.

After creating the game, select your game from the list to start. This game also has an interesting feature: if you make a mistake at any step or do not want to lose the game, you can reset at any time.

Step Five (Optional): Explore Other Dapps on Scroll L2

If you want to try more Dapps and games on Scroll, you can visit the official Dapps list page.

By following these steps, you can start exploring the world of Scroll zkEVM and other L2 networks. As technology advances, these networks bring better scalability and user experience to the Ethereum ecosystem.
